Institute
The Institute of Sports and Sports Sciences (ISSW) is one of the most tradition-steeped and largest sports science institutions in Baden-Württemberg. It derives its distinctive profile from a consistent emphasis on empirical research programmes, a strong focus on knowledge transfer in research, and, more recently, a thematic focus on sport and physical activity across the lifespan.

Studies
The ISSW offers two Bachelor's degree programmes that provide both a broad academic qualification and a profile in teacher education (Gymnasium, vocational school). This continues with the Master of Education programme (Sport as a main and extension subject). The academic Master's programme “Sport and Physical Activity Across the Lifespan”, with its two specialisations “Sport and Performance” and “Sport and Health”, offers sound academic depth as well as application-oriented specialisation in central areas of sports science.

Research
Heidelberg sports science currently comprises three research areas. Information on their research projects can be found on the pages of the respective research areas.

Transfer
Scientific findings must actively benefit society, the economy and professional practice. At the Institute of Sports and Sports Sciences, this is particularly evident in the close integration of research and application – for example in elite and popular sport, in prevention and in the health sector. Through cooperation with associations, educational institutions and other partners, current research findings are made directly usable for society.
